I understand why guys like philly says things like the above, but i don't share that opinion.I use the term 'soul' quite a lot.All good music has to have soul, every genre, it has to connect emotionally, have the power to move & connect with the listener, it has to be real & genuine.
A sampled note can have plenty of soul & dynamics, if the tone & voice hit the right notes in the right places, thats a lovely thing. Musicians jamming in a room together can get a bit boring & played out.
A real soulful musician / singer can make the magic happen anywhere.
Laptop / desktop, whatever tool is used, 'soul' is everywhere.........
,
To me,"soul" is spontanaity..soul cannot be programmed and quantized.
Listen to the great records by Al Green,Teddy Pendergrass,Otis Redding,Sam and Dave,PHillipe Winne of the Spinners,Aretha Franklin and you will understand.
People like Musiq Soul Child,John Legend,Alicia Keys,IMHO really suck in the real soul department.
Thats not the shit I was taught to be soul music,no sir.
Its just watered down dribble.
Im just spoiled by the greats and blessed to have been there.
