James, actually I prefer in general the LDCs for recording piano at home. I think at a short distance between the mics and the piano, as imposed by the small room, a LDC sounds better. I guess that a SDC is better beyond 1 meter or so, which is larger than what I'am used to. However the miniature microphones like DPA 4060, when used inside the piano are an interesting alternative because of the negligible impact of the room acoustics, which are generally rather bad at home when compared to a room suited to public performance.
I tested the DPA 4041, which is a true pressure (= omni) LD microphone. It's wonderful. (But very expensive...)
