My 3 Telefunken MD-421s (from the 60ies I suppose) are among my fave mics. There's a pretty big sonic difference to the newer 421s, not saying that the latter aren't good though.
If you check e-bay Germany or some reputable dealers you'll find older 421s for probably less money than a new one. It's a no-brainer to me especially as these mics seem to last forever. I can't hear any sonic differences between the 3 421s I have, though I certainly didn't do any scientific shootouts.
Those German mic dudes just got it right the first time around......
