The cleanest, simplest way to deploy four cardioids for a circle of players (that results in much richer stereo than any MS combo) is with two DIN pairs placed coincidently. Think of it as a 90 degree XY pair aimed 90 degrees left; both recorded on the left channel, and another 90 degree XY pair aimed 90 degrees to the right; both recorded on the right channel. Spacing the two XY pairs 20cm apart will result in two coincident DIN pairs that will mix at equal levels with no combing. Literally, DIN stereo with 360 degree coverage.
I think I'll try this technique at some point soon, since I have the mics. (Scratching my head for how to mount it on a single stand with my current gear.)
It seems to be great for phase, but I'm wondering what happens to the folks in the two end quadrants (the ones bisected by the stereo bar)? Since these musicians will all be beyond the +/-50 deg SRA of their respective LR pair, should I expect that they'll all be smashed to the edges of the stereo image?
