You have not articulated what it is you want to do. What is your end game? Do you want to become a professional song writer or is this simply for your own pleasure? What genre of music do your songs fall into?
Putting a home studio together does not have to cost a ton. A few thousand will get you enough to make great sounding recordings provided you acquire the skills to do so. You would need a Computer and a DAW, an interface, 1 good microphone and a pair of monitors. That's about 3 grand off the top of my head. If you are poor and living on a budget, then yes, that is a lot of money. But if you're making a decent living, it is doable. As to treating your space, you can turn that into a fun do it yourself project and that won't cost an arm and a leg to do.
It is up to you to determine what it is you want to do. You may, or may not enjoy learning to record and mix. If that does not appeal to you presently, then trust your gut and as many have suggested, let someone else do the engineering. If it interests you, then give it a try.
