You don't have to like it, but what you describe is the reality in many genres.
My personal quest is to bring drums back into the ensemble, away from the lead position they've been lifted up to for quite a while now.
But the artists I work with mostly envision a very produced drum sound.
I partly blame their inability to develop a group groove, but that's another discussion...
