I agree with the counterpoints to my post. I'm just of the opinion, that for somebody new to recording drums, the standard, de-rigueur approach to recording drums with multi-mikes can be a trip down the road to Hell if not completely sure of what one wants in the final outcome. To me, so many modern drum sounds seem to be a replication of live venues with the resulting "haystack" sound of big unnatural bottom end with tingly cymbals. If one needs to mangle the sound for production purposes, then why not just use all the super-produced sounds available via samples or e-drums.
It's almost as if a "good" drum sound to many is so unnatural and super slickly produced. Think of the myriad of super muted heads available to drummers. It's as if the end goal is to take the natural characteristics out of drums. It's just weird to me.
