Which is a very different case to setting the crossover points at the PC, where a software crash, some driver misbehavior or what else? could suddenly send untreated full frequency signals iex. to the tweeters, which would fry them instantly! So these xover filters need to come and be set inside the interface.
With the Sub channels, there's an issue there (minor because it may be handled with cheaply iex using the headphones out). Yes, at many amplification systems, my intended ones too, the installation demands a +1 or +2 subwoofer, so using an interface with only 16 analog outs there is only enough for 8 speakers (bi-amped each). So we need to be creative with those two extra outs, that luckily require only very low frequencies, so that makes it more simple.
About your mentioned volumen control, the CueMix software lately developed by MOTU is really a godsend, it allows to fully control everything hands-on with no latency by all kinds of gear, tablets, laptops, external controls, etc.
Not sure I follow what you're talking about? Maybe you don't work in surround/immersive audio and understand the application? Not going to mansplain here, but in 2025 the features I mention are all pretty much standard kit on any pro 16 channel interface.
