Um, I've been using Auratones for forty-four years. I got my hands on a pile of them from studios I worked at who dumped them when they went out of favor, but, of course, they are back in favor now.
My favorites are the magnetically shielded ones, because of their slight sound difference.
I did extensive recording and mixing work with the examples I own before they were dumped and now they live at home with me. I would caution you that they are addictive. Highly.
One of the uses for Auratones that I haven't seen discussed much is this: when you are in the middle of an extended session of recording and already have your basic sounds, you can downshift to the Auratones and listen at lower volume to save your ears.
Back in the eighties we swept a pair of Auratones with the mic right up on the speaker and found them to be both remarkably flat and wide-range. We joked that we needed to put a headband on them and use them as headphones.
Oh, and by the way, one place I got some of mine from ended up missing theirs and bought Avantones during the production hiatus. No-one likes them. The beauty of the Auratone is how it makes you mix. For some reason the Avantones don't influence you the same as the Auratones. Funny. They look great, though!
