I think you are spot on in identifying this NS-10 mythology as the source of this idea that it is the 'unpleasantness' of the speaker that creates the benefit.
IMO, the "it will sound good anywhere" saying is just an excuse. NS-10s worked for the people who used them because they were familiar. Not because they were unpleasant. They were small enough to bring them with you to an unfamiliar room and stick them right in your face.
