I don't know why one pass only wouldn't work, but experiment and let us know since most of us don't have that compressor. I wouldn't want to do multiple passes with a Neve on an insert either.
With similar compressors I'd use them on a bus. Gain stage it, use the input gain and other controls to find the place where it sounds the best for the material aka the sweet spot. Pre- and/or post- EQ as needed.
