Back in the 80's, I used to have a this thing in the shape of a cassette. It had a magnetic head where the tape would normally be. You put it into the cassette player in your car and then plugged the other end into the headphone jack of a clamshell CD player and now you had
a CD player in your car! Magnet to magnet. That's what this reminds me of.
I think one of the hardware tape sim boxes works this way as well.
