Hi everyone,
TL:DR
Can any of you please recommend monitors that reveal issues by sounding unpleasant in that particular area of the spectrum?
TL:
Now, what do I mean by that; I have a decent pair of monitors that are accurate and revealing and I love them for doing my main bulk of work which requires precision and coherency, but the problem with them is that they make everything sound pleasant even if it's wrong.
To clarify further, let's say there's an issue with the mix where there's a buildup of unpleasant mids around 500Hz. These monitors will show that, but you won't notice it straight away because this buildup on them sounds fine (because they're powerful, well made and can "take it"). To hear the problem, I have to go to my second room where I have a pair of bookshelf hifi speakers (set as mid filed) which reveal issues immediately by sounding very unpleasant in those parts of the spectrum.
So, my expensive monitors cost 3500€, my bookshelfs cost exactly ten times less (350€) and only by combining them this way can I get a clear idea on what's going on with my mixes and masters. Once I hear the error on my bookshelfs, I can then very much hear that same issue on my main monitors, but not before, so I'd like to get a pair of mains on which I can hear the issues straight away and stop wasting time this way.
So my question is; are you aware of any studio speakers (up to 10.000€ a pair) that are both accurate and unpleasant (i.e. error-revealing)?
Thanks in advance
I’m currently using Focal Twin6 as my main monitors and I use a pair of Fostex 6301B as my “lofi” reference, which are amazing at identifying issues in the low mids.
I struggled for a long time with mix translation. I wound up investing in a Dirac processor from MiniDSP. It does a much better job over ARC and Sonarworks, as the Dirac processing has impulse response correction, which helped mitigate phase and reverberation issues.
I have also invested in Slate Digital VSX and found them invaluable when checking my mixes.
My mixes all translate well to a variety of playback systems.
