One thing about the ngBusComp vs the SSL though: the ng is an SSL style comp. That doesn’t mean it sounds anything like an actual SSL G series comp. In fact, David (Mixbus TV) shootout between the two and they were very different in terms of sound (personally I much preferred the WesAudio more on the material he was feeding it).
When people label something an “SSL style” bus comp, it just really means it’s a VCA with attack and release times that allow it to make things snappy. That’s it….plus the SSL style meters. Some of them do use the same THAT VCA (or at least they claim to). Very few of them, if any, sound anything like the G series comp.
I know a lot of people live and die by the idea that you have to have a VCA smashing the drum bus in parallel but not all of us go by that and it seems like maybe you don’t. Don’t let that alter your decision.
It’s really simple. Get the bus comp that you think will help get you from wherever your point A is to wherever you want your point B to be. That’s not something ChatGPT or any other entity (human or non-human) can tell you.
Oh yes yes! I meant literally SSL style plugin comps, like, Brainworx Townhouse plugin which is advertised as an SSL clone, and there’s plenty others like it…. Unless I’ve been absolutely lied to and literally most VCA comps have been rebranded as “ssl style”. That said I do appreciate you pointing out it’s a VCA comp for others to come across scanning this thread.
And quick note, I primarily use ChatGPT to hammer out and reflect back excruciating details that I don’t want to burden someone else with brainstorming lol, it’s certainly not about having an info-bloated chatbot telling me what to think, esp when it spits out the wrong info so often with audio gear.
Anyway-
your comment is super super appreciated and helpful. For me, if I’m going out the box, I want some kind of non-linearity and color that I can’t do in the box. Weiss comp plugin has been my transparent squeeze and I liked ngbuscomp’s option of introducing thd and iron so I can choose to dirty stuff up as I like, or to make it super clean for mastering duties. And of course the digital recall/interface is a whopping cherry on top.
But…. Tubes…. I love tubes. I love tube saturation and tube compressors and tube amps and etc etc etc. What I’m curious about is
how clean the Ngtubecomp gets, in consideration to how “clean” a tube processor can even get.
Maybe I’ll check some Rhea samples and get a sense for Wesaudio’s tube compressor to satiate my urgency for more ngtubecomp content.
Very focused on a bang for buck purchase!
