What I found more puzzling was (regardless of pattern) that both pairs were parallel, and not aimed out. Spacing of each pair also seems needlessly narrow; would not produce a very engaging stereo spread.

The extreme up and down aims would make sense to reduce sibilants.

It seems likely to me that the two pairs were to provide a choice of perspectives after the fact, and not actually mixed together.

Personally, for cleaner video, I would have put a moderately-spaced pair of high quality BLMs on the floor at the center of the arc, and probably an ORTF or NOS pair off camera for added room ambience, if needed.
