I use lightweight glass epoxy tubing (three pieces; the outer two of smaller dia. to fit inside the center section), and simply suspend the center mic pair on extensions that compensate for the flex, so that they align horizontally with the outer pair.

The mic mounts are Sabra-Som; also very lightweight.
With compact-head mics like Rode NT6 and Schoeps CMC 1 L, it's quite stable on a single stand; the only way I've ever used it.
