The main obvious difference is that they used different transformers. At least the housing looks completely different. If they are different indeed then this would make the larges impact on the sound difference between them.
I'm not going to agree or disagree on the p to p part. I have used PCB and p to p versions of the same guitar tube amp and the p to p sounds superior by a fair margin imho.
My favourite tube gear in my studio, Comps, EQ, pre's and mics are all p to p.
Anyway, that aside (it's a pointless argument as we'll never agree) I can imagine the older TX's sounded better.
I used a CL-1A 25 years ago on a project and it was THE best bass and vocal tracking compressor I have ever used - so musical and "warm" sounding with this amazing envelope - I so which I'd bought it!
I think your 500 series unit looks great - if it sounds as good as it looks - I'll be adding it to my wish list
