It's really tragic how SSL treated the X-rack. It was superior to 500 series in every way - from the power supply, to the spacing (4 spaces high instead of 3 so knobs are spaced better) to form factor and being able to fit stereo modules in a single space, to the total recall and even copying settings other modules if you have more of the same modules (easy to do stereo or even 5 channel matching if you have the modules).
SSL always kinda treated it like a red headed step child. They never released stereo versions of the black modules, they never released a module of just the cut filters, stubbornly refusing it no matter how much users begged for it because having the cut filters on their pres were the only thing selling their pres for the x-rack.
Sorry for venting lol...Every time I hear a mention of the x-rack, it still annoys the hell out of me how it was superior to 500 series and SSL insisted on crashing and burning it like it owed them money.

The X Rack was superior, and I loved mine which include the SSL 2 bus compressor. However, with no more support and discontinuing the X Rack, I ended up selling it for the SSL Software and UF1, UC1, and 2 UF8's. It does not sound exactly the same. The character is the same, but they can't copy fast transients with plug ins. But that sound is not as popular as it was 15 to 20 years ago either. So that is another reason why I sold my X Rack
