VCA compressors, by their nature, tend to grab harder than opto compressors. (I have a pair of Avalon Design 737's that use tube opto compressors and and are by their nature - soft compressors).
The low THD button is quite interesting in this regard. It makes a significant difference.
The F/B sidechain button is also quite in line with the smooth issue. If one wants to reduce the degree of grab and make the compressor even smoother, using the F/B mode button can do this.
The use of all analog signal path is critical. The front panel controls are digital step switches but no audio signal passes through them. They are simply used as to control the processes. This is a brilliant method.
Awesome, thanks. Have you compared it to other SSL style comps? Another one that pops up is the RMS 744. The Obsidian and Smart are great as well according to many. The Bus+ for me is a great deal with its features and most of all its SSL. The only downside for me is that it’s 2RU but this can be overlooked. I like to start mixing into the bus comp and sometimes that would mean being mobile. It’s a sacrifice to go the rack route but again, if it’s that good I’ll go Bus+.
