I did a quick test comparing the new plug-in to an old friend of many, the UAD Ampex ATR-102. I loaded one of the ultra linear presets and matched tape settings and finally tweaked the APB to sound roughly the same. I could not get the bass quite the same sounding given the controls at hand on both plugins but, I did phase invert and time align, to make sure most is as well matched as I could do in a reasonable time frame. The settings on the APB plugin are quite conservative. 80-s head and no tweaks to the cutoff or bump, since all changes made the difference bigger.
The song is a track by Toto, which is already well mixed and mastered and in little need of anything more, but I still use it for testing, since it has a lot of frequencies and still some air. I think it got better through the APB...
There is quite a difference between the ATR and the APB in this example, even if some frequencies null pretty far down. APB seems to do "more" and I guess sounds more analog. Enjoy!
damn! it sounds like a record with the McDSP tape. I forgot about the APB.....
