Can anyone help me understand why the gainstaging concept is a good thing? The manual says:
"There is no module output gain. To make up the gain reduction introduced by a certain module, always use the next available “Drive” knob in the chain. "
and also (several times):
"This button switches the <module> on and off. This function can be used to A/B the effect of a module and help save CPU cycles."
But due to the lack of an output gain in each module it is just not possible to easily A/B what a module does. For example if I set the compressor to reduce gain by 5db and then add 5db drive in the next module, bypassing the compressor would leave me with 5db gain I didn't actually want.
I'm sure the guys behind this know what they're doing and there's a certain reason the concept is like that, but I must be missing one part of the puzzle because to me setting up the modules in Limiter6 always ends up in a hassle due to this behavior.
I know there's also an A/B function but it has only two states and there are 4 modules. It's also not as intuitive as simply bypassing a module.
Fabian would be the best to answer your questions, and I’m sure he will chime in at some point. Limiter 6 does have an “equal loudness” bypass feature for the entire plugin, so while that might not be exactly what you’re looking for (it sounds like you’d like it for the individual modules, I do find the feature helpful. The button is near the lower right part of the plugin and it’s called “Auto Pad”. Once that is enabled an “equal loudness bypass” option should become visible.
