Yes, re not having to open the 360 GUI, it has its uses though but not needed as everything is accessible via the UF8.
You need to set a layer for the 360 side of things in the 360 software via the UF8 settings option tab. It's a bit confusing, but the layer needs to be set in order for it to be viewed on the UF8. This should be cleary outlined in the setup vid.
Once set, a channel will only show on UF8 360 layer, when a 360 plugin i.e. their channel strip is inserted on a track. be advised that the channel colours are limited due to the 4bit chip they used. The colours get near on the UF8 but are not exact. Blue could be come yellow if the colour setting in your DAW veers to far towards another colour. Track colours are accurately represented in the 360 mixer software window.
It's less likely that SSL will break their functionality moving forwards for quite a few years to come. I think they've hit on a long running winner here. I've actually got a UF1 here on trial as well, wasn't sure if it would give me more than my CC121 which works perfectly and in sync with the UF8/UC1. Currenty, it looks like the UF1 will be staying.
I have to caveat that I'm very used to SSL consoles so the transition for me was quite easy, but there's absolutely no way I'd go back to mousing around now. Once everything is edited and I'm in mix mode, I can literally turn the screens off and mix away. The workflow is infinitely faster once muscle memory kicks in.
Ah, thanks again, especially for showcasing your experience with the UF8. I think it's the most beautiful and feature-rich DAW controller out there with motor faders, from the looks of it (without having used the 360 layer yet). I'll have to try and think about liking to have to push a VST plugin onto each track that should be controllable via the 360 layer. I enjoy hearing about your muscle memory, it's something I'm very fond of when it comes to workflows. I know exactly what is where in Live, and how to access my most-used functionality.
Good to hear I don't need switching to 360 to use the UF8, I got that wrong initially, and it would be something to draw me away from the UF8. Does it have to run in the background though, i.e. I have to open up 360 in order to use the 360 layer in my DAW?
