It is hard for many people to change overnight to a different workflow, GUI etc, of another DAW, when they feel comfortable with it and does the job. No one will argue with that.
But, when things evolve with new technologies that make our work better, faster and i'm stuck with a software that doesn't catch up with the evolution, then there is a problem.
ProTools is a great app, i use it since version 3, somewhere back in the 90s and still is fine but it is evolving quite slow and it costs the most, make it not valuable anymore.
Avid's is quite productive when it comes to cash grab business practices, but not at all with product development. It is the last DAW out there that is not Apple Silicon native.
If that is not priority for them, in an industry where 90% is using Mac computers, then what is? I'm tired of excuses like, PT is very complex app, blah blah... To go slow, just serves their subscription business model and nothing else.
The product development is "hostage" due to their need for constant cash flow, so they intentionally slow things down.
Let's talk about the competition. Steinberg released Nuendo 12 with all the features ProTools missing and so much more, in a pretty competitive price, with options for cross grade that make it even more accessible for users of other DAWs. It is one time payment till the next upgrade, which might be in 3-4 years time, more or less. It works great with EuCon surfaces, the integration is amazing, (maybe not like it's on an S6 but, that's a different story all together, for obvious reasons).
Steinberg's goal (from my POV) was to create a full featured software, make it enticing to attract post production and gaming users.
The product itself it the selling point.
In Avid's case, they just shuffle the product naming, announce new subscription tiers, move some features from ProTools Ultimate to ProTools Studio, add a few ridiculous ones and they sell that same old thing as new! The product evolution is not the priority as it is pretty obvious. Where is the value of the annual £369 for a perpetual license holder of PT Ultimate in 2022 with 3 updates with mostly bug fixes and just a handful of features no-one asked for?
Where is the Apple Silicon native support, the ARA2 integration, other user requested features like markers tracks, folders in Clips, ability to open more than one project etc. I won't mention the ADR features one can find in Nuendo that need third party software to work in PT... So much to consider here...
I find it pretty normal to defend your workflow and the software you are familiar with, but that doesn't mean there are no better alternatives.
You have to invest time for it to work.
Change comes with a cost, learning curve is the biggest, you need to dedicate some time to learn how to do the same things on another DAW more efficiently and with less cost. That is not possible for many, it's a fact.
Some people are forced to do it, some by choice, but nothing comes easy in the end.
Cheers!
