For the close mics on the piano, the panning is standard.
Hard LFT., hard RT. and the U89 on the butt end panned at 3 or 4 o'clock on RT. Bass report from claw hammer left hand MUST be anchored on RT
loudspeaker.
But really the array I'm talking about includes 8-10 mics.
That is the 3 close ones, two wide cardioid spaced to LFT and RT. of the piano about 10-15 feet from each end of the piano; then 3 across the front of the 2nd or 3rd row of the auditorium. Two far and high 4006 omnis for ambience and applause.
The 2 mics spaced widely to each end of the piano give the impression of the piano's position on stage. Important to give the piano a setting of being on a stage and to hear the size of the stage.
Wide cardioid over the 2nd. row panned hard LFT, wide cardioid over the 2nd. row panned hard RT. and an omni middile mic over the 2nd. row panned middle. These spaced total of about 6-8 feet apart, 2 feet between each one.
Blend to taste--only works in a good acoustic.
This set up originally formulated at sessions at Carnegie Hall in 1999 for DVD-Audio recordings in surround.
