I wonder if you could help me. I have a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 interface and I have brought a very nice Sontronics Aria microphone. I have created a vocal booth and I’m all ready to go … but now I’m thinking - should I get a mic pre amp and if so, which one? I just want to record acoustic guitar, banjo etc but mainly vocals! I don’t want to break the bank but want to get good quality?
Cheers Matt
Looks like you invested in a very nice microphone, although I don’t know much about it. In my opinion, the built in Scarlet pre amps are decent but are really based on a power vs performance trade off as well as cost vs performance trade off. My memory of the scarlet interfaces is that you can’t truly bypass this circuitry (go straight to the ADC) and so you’ll always have some influence from it, perhaps audible, even if you get a dedicated preamp. That being said, I personally would still consider getting something external that is closer to the caliber of your mic. If budget is of absolute importance, a used focusrite ISA2 is a great first piece (I’ve seen them for $500 on Alto music if I recall correctly). If you can afford a 500 series rack plus a unit or two, the RND 511 can be found used for $500 or so if you’re lucky and you’re likely to really like it compared to the Scarlett. Both the ISA and the 511 have extremely useful high pass filters that allow you to remove unwanted “junk”. The API512 is also a classic for a reason. Or just buy a Vintech X73i, still my favorite semi budget friendly pre/eq combo. There are many options out there though and even more opinions on what’s best. Maybe take your mic to a commercial studio for an hour or two and try a bunch of preamp options, make your decision based on what your ears prefer. Good luck and have fun!
