This has a basic design flaw, which is that you can’t really push the compressor threshold up without bringing the noise floor up too, as it’s dependent on input gain. If you happen to also have vintage noisy equipment it can become very problematic, as it gets enhanced. So most of the times I’ll end up using just very slight compression amounts.
While you're not incorrect on how the gain staging works... it's the same with an 1176, or distressor, or any other comp with a fixed threshold...
