All good points, but according to Rupert Neve, his reason for using the class A circuit design was to eliminate cross-over distortion. Later models used Class A/B such as the 1081, the 31102, the 31105 and a number of others.
A 31102 is a 1084 but with the line input on an a channel routing module in a 8058/68. The 31099 would be the 1073 equivalent. Both are the same class A design as their counterparts.
