The Kalis are dark. The HS8 is more neutral up top but a bit grainy and a little Yamaha harsh. It has a better midrange than the LP8. The harshness is nothing compared to Genelec and Focal metal tweeters. The HS8 is the most common monitor I see in smaller studios. It works and translates.
TBH if the Kalis were as accurate and had as good detail separate across their range then id go with them to avoid unnecessary harshness BUT from what I heard, and what other people have said too, around the low mids, it just gets a little fuzzy and the Yamaha does actually seem to stay tighter and keep things separate . It also shows a clanky string noise upfront where the Kalis hid it much more. In a perfect world we could get a monitor as defined as the Yamaha but with a darker tone that sacrificed no clarity but I havent seen it
