You bring up kick drums. A low frequency is a low frequency. The directional perception of 50Hz doesn't change depending on whether it's part of a kick drum or part of a bass guitar. You may want to read a bit about the Fourier transform if you are unfamiliar with it. This link is a good introduction:

As for non-symmetrical waves -- they necessarily contain even-order harmonics. This page mentions it in the section "Harmonic Distortion" but there are more full presentations of this elsewhere:
