I should mention that I have also since compared the AMS Neve 1073n to both the BAE 1073 and two vintage units.
I'm sorry to say that in my experience, the BAE was the least inspiring of the bunch. In the same tone palette? Yes definitely. But did it have the same magic or mojo? Not really. It didn't feel like it had the same harmonic complexity. Perhaps a little harder as well.
The winners on the other hand were the two vintage units. WTF?!? Why must I be plagued with this awareness. Indeed, signals felt more whole. A perfect combination of clear highs that were not aggressive and a forward mid-range that felt solid and pleasing. I will re-listen to my tests in a few days to reconsider but it seemed pretty clear. Are we talking major difference? No. Would I be happy with the 1073n's. Sure.
I'm curiosity to eventually hear AMS's authentic remake of the 1073.
