PreSonus EarMix 16M AVB by bace
This unit is a AVB device and that is pretty cool. However it is not intended to be used as AVB device. It is very much intended to be used with presonus digital mixers and that might work fine. This review is for the device as being a AVB unit.
First of all it has the same limitation as their mixers. They operate at maximum 48 kHz. So if you put this into your system you are also limited to 48 kHz. Not very good if your clients comes with half done project needed some work with higher sampling rates.
Other AVB gears use up to 192 kHz.
AVB is complex and need at last some configuration for selecting it's peer on the network. For this they have applications. They have ipad, mac etc. I first tried their UC to the ipad. It did not find the device, but the Mac application did. But all the application do is open apple's own AVB configuration tool. So you can only access this with a Mac that have a AVB enabled ethernet that is connected to a AVB switch system. So you can not configure this device to talk to other AVB device without a AVB switch. You can get it to talk to the Mac if you connect to it without any switch.
Other vendors like RME and Motu have a web server in the device so no need for the computer to be AVB enabled, not depending on external software etc.
It is not intended to be used as a AVB device.
It does not have many AVB streams variants compared to oter AVB devices, however the variants it does have matches both what Apple,Motu and RME can provide. But RME does not want to connect to it. Motu get a connected but it does have some audio-noise.
The hardware is solid, I would have liked a bit bigger knobs for volume. It does not get warm and it can be powered from POE ethernet.
Is it totally useless? More or less yes but with the right firmware updates this have a potential to be amazing and an star in AVB ecosystem. I have tested version 220.127.116.1171. Im not sure how much CPU it have but it have power do to EQ and limiting and mixing on all channels. A down-sampling to a lower amount of channels could possible and they need to sort out the compatibility issues.
