U47 Live

Anyone have experience using a U47 in a live remote setting? Thinking about trying one out on a well known tenor saxophonist tomorrow... I found a rental house with particularly cheap rates, thought it might be fun to play around with. Heavy and rich tenor sound, pretty dead club. Thoughts?

I should also add it's a double drummer quintet... Any idea how the spill sounds?

Haven't used a 47, but I have used 57's on numerous live dates. Sound great. No complaints- big rich sound.

My biggest issue is making sure that nobody unplugs power supplies and microphones. A bit more of a problem than with "normal" condenser mics.

Ben, I'm assuming you are referring to a UM57 and not an SM57!

To The original poster....the kind of spill I'd be worried about is the mic being knocked to the floor.

yes... should have been more clear. A UM57. Usually used them in jazz shows for brass solos, sax solos and bass.

Thought I'd share how the gig went...

The well known tenor player was Joe Lovano, with a killing band featuring Esperanza Spalding, James Weidman, Otis Brown and Francisco Mela. Venue was the Mint, in LA. A pretty small blues and rock club (and interesting space for a jazz quintet, but it had a vibe).

The U47 FET sounded amazing on Joe. Great body and nice isolation. Here was the rest of the mic list:

Joe - U47 FET
Clippon - AMT mic (not used in mix)
Bass - DPA 4099 and DI
Piano L+R - DPA 4061s
Drum OHs - KSM27s and AT4033s
Kicks - SM57 and RE20
Rooms - MC012s

Pres were a mix of DAV, RME and Digimax. All into an RME Fireface UFX at 48/24. Mixed in Nuendo

Video was shot with 2 5dmkii's, 2 t2i's running magic lantern and a gopro. Edited in Sony Vegas Pro 12.

Sounds great!

From your website it's not clear what you do b.t.w. do you produce and/or edit the video too?

Thanks guys!

Huub - I do it all... record, mix, film and edit... for all of my videos. I'll often just be a one man show, setting up 3 stationary cameras and operating one (while monitoring audio). But I also bring in additional shooters to work for me.

You are pissing me off! LOL OK, seriously, great gig and great job of capturing it. Really wonderful. Really, really wonderful. I liked it a lot, too, because it made me think of the wonderful times I spent in some NY jazz joints in the late 50's and early 60's. Vibrant, alive, exciting, musical, inventive, amazing talents having fun with the sound. Wow! It reminds me of why I love jazz so much. Thanks a lot.

I used one to mic a cello once at a church Christmas concert. It sounded very nice in that application. But I couldn't enjoy the concert much cause I kept staring at it to make sure no one bumped it around

By the way, that's a great mix. Nice work.

Great performance, sound, mix, and really nice videos! I can feel the performers breath and sweat from the image. Unbelievable you did all this by yourself!

Here's a modern version of the u47 live. Peluso 2247 SE on trumpet and kick:

Griff Kazmierczak, jazz trumpet - Mad Blues

Both mics were set to subcardioid, halfway between cardioid and omni. Griff has a brighter sound on Mayday.
