handheld field recorder (for roland CS-10em Binaural mics)

Hello everyone,

I've been digging through old threads and reading online reviews on portable handheld recorders.

Basically I'm looking for a good rig for soundwalks and field recording that I can carry around with me at all times. I plan on using it with a pair of roland CS-10em binaural mics.

I don't need/want any fancy options (effects, overdubbing, etc.), just 2 really solid channels, 1/8th mic in (for the binaural's), and good built in mics.

I've already found a few options on the market but thought I'd get some input from the community.

I've looked at:
Tascam dr-05
Sony PCMM10

I've tried one of the zoom recorders a while back and wasn't sold on the unit. Sound Devices is out of my price range.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of great suggestions here, but I'll also recommend asking on taperssection.com. I've been picking their brains for advice for a similar small hand held recorder. They know their stuff in that area!

For the small ones the new Olympus LS-12 and LS-14 are at the top of my list. Small, well made and very ergonomic.

Going up slightly, the Olympus LS-100, Roland, Tascam DR100II and the new Nagra Lino.

My own units are the old Olympus LS-10 and the Nagra SD (the LINO has the same body as the SD, but with fixed mics and 2/3 cheaper).

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the input guys. I hadn't considered nagra at all. The Lino seems to be within my price range.

I'm getting the Lino myself. Hope we both like it!

I love my Nagra SD - very happy - the LINO seems to have an identical body, but a few less switches, and integral microphones rather than the flexible plug-in arrangement of the SD.

So I would expect the LINO to be a great little beastie at a very good price.
