mackie sdr 2496 and hard drive GB

Hi, I am buying a chea unused Mackie SDR2496
It comes with 20GB hard drive that is 90 minutes of audio (24 tracks).
It is little for me, I would upgrade to 60/80 GB or more immediately.
I would like to be sure that I can do this easily:
- is there any sort of firmware update to do to mount bigger hard drives?
- is the hard drive an IDE one? Are these drives easy to find?
Thank you

You can add external drives. See p. 44 in the manual: http://www.mackie.com/pdf/sdr2496_og.pdf

I am choosing it ove the alesis hd24 because it is lighter and less deep, I would not add any external device to it.
Is it possible to upgrade the hd of the unit itself?

Google "The Last Mackie Hard Disk Recorder Manual" by Mike Rivers. You will need to replace at least on PROM and update the OS to put a bigger drive in your new Mackie; they are typically available on eBay. I did mine a couple of years ago and don't really remember what I did, but it can be done. I have found mine to be very reliable, but I had to do a major contact cleaning on the removable drive caddy recently. Just used mine last night for a 24-track location recording and it worked fine.

Douglas could you please explain me better how many hard drive are inside the unit?
I have read the manual but couldn't understand well.
Is there one internal HD and a second in the removable caddy, or the HD in the caddy is the only one?

My HDR24/96 works perfectly with a SSD, via P-ATA <-> S-ATA converter.

There is an internal drive and also a removable drive in a caddy. I think mine are all 120GB but I am not certain and I am not near the machine.

OK
I have asked the seller of the sdr 2496 the firmware version of the machine, he says that he reads sdr-1.0-1.2.4, is this the last review?
Have I to still replace an eprom to upgrade the HD?
Unfortunatly the mackie forums are offline, a lot of topics would have helped me a lot.

Mike has been really kind and professional in his reply, and after his suggestion I dediced to go with the Alesis HD24, since that particular Mackie SDR2496 was the first release of hardware with some little issues.
