Talk to me, please...

I am fairly new at this, and have recently recorded a local student orchestra.

I'd like to hear any comments anyone might have, on any aspect of these clips. (Except the performance, per se-- I'm interested in comments and critique of my recording technique, such as it is.) Anything you might observe about mic placement, mic quality, appropriateness of a particular technique, observations about the space, anything you might care to share.

I recorded two performances, which were in two very different spaces. I don't know how an experienced pro would characterize them, but, the first, to me, was exceedingly live. Almost like a stone cathedral. It was the atrium of the state office complex, which is all concrete, and has four stories of vertical space. Walls and floor are essentially concrete. I put two stereo pairs on the same stand, so recorded two takes of each of the performances. One pair was omnis in AB, and the other was a pair of wide cards in a NOS-like geometry. Both were 30cm apart. With the idea of trying to get some direct sound, I placed the stand as close to the orchestra as possible-- in fact the stand legs were touching the podium. The height was 12 feet.

I did the same setup at a second performance in a different location, which was not nearly as reverberant.

What should I do differently the next time?

Thank you for all comments and criticism.

DG

Thank you, GIACOMO.

Although I asked for critique of recording technique or equipment, I also would like suggestions regarding which set of mics, in which venue, I should use to make a CD (for distribution to the players)-- and you gave me a direct opinion on that. Thank you.

I appreciate your comment. I am still "educating my ears."

Hello DG,

I'm interested in remote recording of acoustic performances, too
Listening through my laptop speakers, the NOS file sounds louder.
