Great thread! I'm demoing Amazon Music HD right now, and most of these recordings are available at CD or higher quality. Like someone mentioned above, I'm not fully on board with the streaming ethos, but there's no doubt it's an amazing value for an engineer looking for reference material.

Can't believe it took me this long to find this thread, lots of phenomenal music posted in here! There are countless beautiful ECM records from the last fifty years or so, for sure, and a good many since this thread was born fourteen years ago(!).

I've been a Mark Turner fan for many years but for some reason I never listened to his ECM album "Lathe of Heaven" until today. It's extremely badass, incredible musicianship across the board, but there's also a delightfully gear-slutty video highlighting some of the recording process. This was done at Avatar in NYC, not at Rainbow or one of the other European studios that ECM likes to use, but it still has the ECM vibe and sound quality.

Avatar used to be the Power Station, and now I suppose it is once again... Berklee bought it a few years ago and they've renamed it "Power Station at BerkleeNYC" or something like that. I hope they don't ruin it. It's a legendary place. At least one of my other favorite ECM records, "Prime Directive" by the Dave Holland Quintet, was recorded there as well.

Hey Progger, great post!
I started this thread back in another life.
I am so happy to see it still active,
and filled with such quality ECM content.
peace,
Walter

Indeed!

I just picked up the new Carla Bley/Steve Swallow/Andy Sheppard on vinyl - wonderful stuff!

Yes - this one was engineered by Mr Amerio.

Forgot about this thread... As of November of this past year, I'm now officially in the ECM club. Engineered this album and sent it to them for mastering. They did their fairy dust, magic thing to it and IMO, it sounds pretty fantastic. Definitely fits in the style of their recordings.

Before the session, I did the figurative "deep dive" listening to probably a dozen and a half or more of that label's recordings. Trying to figure out what they do to make them so consistent, even through they don't all have the same engineers. At the end of the day, my conclusion is that it was lots of microphones, carefully placed to balance the direct sound of the instrument with the sound in the room. Then with large quantities of specific reverbs used. Our recording had a mic (or 2) on each instrument as well as a full set of room/ensemble microphones.

Have been listening to some ECM albums/Artists the past few days. (Paul Bley, Jan Garbarek, Bill Frisell) to name a few. I know Jan Erik Kongshaug used multiple reverbs (EMT plate, Lexicon 960L, TC system 6000, Bricasti M7) and so fourth. As many people I’m always experimenting with multiple reverbs.

Curious if anyone knows the lengths Jan would use? Although he prefers digital he stills talks about digital rooms or chambers. I do not hear a lot of short reflections. Trying to understand his reverb approach. Any insights??

Bumping this again in hopes there is someone with some knowledge on the topic.
