Question Pair of EV 635a's as stereo pair for quartet singing?

Tried to talk my local acapella chapter into getting a good pair of SD condensers for an upcoming barbershop quartet show in March, however, they didn't want to spend the $$.
Just wondering if two EV 635a's can function decently, without
picking up too much room ambience (or lack thereof), or audience noise.
Some of the quartets need less "help" from the P.A. system than the others.
I have one EV 635a right now.

The "free" option is a (don't laugh) Tandy stereo condenser.

To think I really stumped you guys with this question.

The only reason I vaguely considered a pair of the 635a's was
that when close miking, it was difficult for me to tell that a
635a WAS an omni rather than a cardiod. My assumption is that
once you boost a pre enough to pick up vocals approximately
a foot and a half away, there will be too much ambient noise
in a live setting.

Will try to talk them again into a Schoeps or a DPA pair.

I'm gonna spent the Remote Possibilities Forum's 1100 post on you Chris!

I cannot speak for everyone else, but you didn't stump me with your question.
Even though the 635A is a better mic then the original 635, I didn't have anything super positive to say about using them for your upcoming barbershop quartet date.

I have said something like this before...
My first choice would be to use the gear (mic) in front of me. If that doesn't work, I'll try the one next to it. You can definitely apply that concept to your situation. If those mics are your only option; try it, you may like it. You may like them more if you create a baffle behind the mics to reduce the possible
ambient noise in that setting.

Some positive stuff on the 635A...
The EV 635A is the cheapest dynamic omni around. The mic's signal to noise spec is an improvement to the original. It's not only better sounding then the old 635, you can use it as a hammer if you can't find one in a pinch.

Many TV shows still use the 635 and 635A for room tone and FX mics.

Thanks Steve.
Supposedly the stereo mike is half decent, so that's
probably what we'll be using to "enhance" the sound
level of the quartets. Maybe if the chapter isn't happy
then, they'll spring for a pair of the Rode SD condensers.
If I was recording them for $$ on a regular basis, I'd
probably wait to check out the Studio Projects C4's
to use on the next show, and for making quartet demos.

A good condition 635a is a great sounding mike. If anybody ever DID use one as a hammer, it won't have any top-end.

Fortunately the one I just bought from e-bay is in mint
condition, and the "top" end is very nice indeed.

The funny thing is that the 635a and the Shure SM57
both sound very good on my voice, despite gearlusting
for stuff like an RCA 77DX or a Sennheiser 441 eventually.

The acoustics at home are mediocre at best, so I try to
stick to microphones that will pick up less room ambience,
and will mitigate a moderate tendency of sibilance from
yours truly.

Use whatever mic(s) you have available, and that you thinks sounds the best on your voice (and the Quartet's). rollz

The brand, type, model, price, etc., doesn't matter, (even if it IS a TANDY!!).

Lots of GREAT vocals have been recorded using 57s!! heh

Thanks Bob.

Must confess that one of the top quartets singing at the show
has a friend who's a pro live sound engineer that'll
be running it now-just found out last night.
I'll be helping him and thereby gaining further education into
the mysteries of sound.

P.S. The Tandy has to be good, my friend got it inside his Captain
Crunch box.
