Anyone heard the Sanken CMS-50 or CSS-50?

Sanken has released the new CMS-50, which is a mid side mic intended for on-camera use. The mid capsule is what they call a “cardioid shotgun”. I’m not sure what to make of that. It outputs the raw mid and side signals. I’m thinking about using this on my new Sony A1 rig. I’m hoping to use this setup form behind the scenes video while recording our next album. For example, imagine walking into the studio during rehearsals. You could capture the stereo ambiance, the sound field all the way to mono in post. Anyway…thought I’d ask if anyone had heard one of these. The CSS-50 is also m/s, it with a built-in matrix. It cannot output raw mid side, so isn’t really going to work for my purpose. It’s also about twice as long.

I have the CMS-50 and it’s good for what it is, which is a very small and low profile M-S solution.

It’s sound is definitely on the bright side, is clear and has good dynamic range but skews a bit toward the top end.

It doesn’t really compare to my mainstay M-S mic, the Neumann RSM191. The Neumann sounds enveloping and absolutely realistic, to the point where I have sometimes forgotten I was wearing headphones while recording with it. The Sanken has much more of a “you’re listening to a microphone” vibe.

Trade off of course is that the Neumann is bigger and heavier and must be used with its matrix box, and the Sanken is small and light and simple. It sounds good and definitely has its place.
