Methinks you read the book a little too quickly - the chapter "The Piano" makes it quite clear that the tail pair IS intended as the only pair for piano solo; not just for focus with a 'main pair'. With certain pianos/rooms, they suggest the pair may be better placed somewhere around nearer the curve/keyboard. The only other main micing recommended is three spaced through the curve.

Where the tails pair IS recommended for focus with a main pair is when the piano is accompanying singer/s or other instruments.

I’d just add to this that in many other guide-publications for tail-area miking, it’s usually recommended that the final placement is dictated by ear rather than specific measurements or alignment to components such as frame, bass strings, etc (which is what the Decca book emphasises, quite prescriptively ).

It’s also typically shown as an arc of potential positions …rather than a precisely defined single location…largely to account for instrument projection and how it’s treated by the space it’s played in.

Did you record this? Was is done tail end (some might say Decca) or front facing?

I still like it and have fond memories about it, so to me it sounds correct and yes it was done front facing. The pianist has a very interesting Schubert interpretation btw, amazing timing and phrasing, the way he manages/distributes the sound is near flawless imo.

The recording was in a small chapel, with 200+ kids next to it on sunday having a scouts meeting …
