UNC is a very special place, and Tonu gets an unbelievable sound from an orchestra that if I’m not mistaken is mostly undergrad and non-major. It was a privilege to get to cut my teeth recording them. The sound is mostly 4006’s here. 2’ AB is still my go-to for a lot of my live recording. I am so glad to see so many folks are digging the rep!

I am anxious to get back to Chapel Hill, as one of my best friends is from there, and there is a fantastic Peruvian restaurant where I would eat almost exclusively when I was in town. I highly recommend a visit.

I don't believe that's true. UNC does offer music programs, both undergraduate and graduate degrees. As such, space in the performing groups goes to music majors first (they require the credits to graduate). I'm told (high school friend who took his trumpet to UNC and never played it because he was pre-med) it's unusual for even a chair in the marching band to go to a non-music major.

I went to NCSU (26 miles away as the Google flies), which has an engineering school but offers no music degrees. For that reason I was able to play in the orchestra every semester while pursuing my engineering degree. I could not have done that (OK, either of those) at Carolina.

That said, UNC does have excellent performance groups and some fine performance spaces, as does Duke (only 12 miles or so from UNC). And Raleigh has the NC Symphony, which is a fine group of excellent pros playing in the best performance hall between NY and Atlanta (IMHO of course). The Research Triangle area is typically a good place for music, even if you have to sometimes hunt for it.

And while you're in Chapel Hill eating... don't forget Vimala's. I love her dosas and her cardamom brownie. So many good places to eat in Chapel Hill and Durham!

I’m pretty sure Christian (Norsehorse) is still CEO and owner, Kevin was chief engineer there to mid 2018. Arts Laureate retains a large and talented recording , editing and video team....business must be booming for them 👍

That is correct, Studer.

Regarding UNC’s music degree offerings:

https://music.unc.edu/

They do not offer an MM or DMA, only MA and PhD’s in Musicology.

The orchestra page says anyone can audition for the group, and though I never polled the orchestra when working there 5 or so years ago, I got the impression that it was representative of more than just the music student body.
