Ehrlund, Thuresson,Pearl

Good morning. I want to ask if anyone has experience recording solo grand piano with Ehrlund, Pearl and Thuresson microphones. or if you know of examples of solo piano recordings from these brands. Thank you

I have used Thuresson mics for some CD and live recordings, but mostly as a main pair. I have also at one time owned a Milab mic, which is close to Pearl. Thuresson mics are truly transparent and sound amazing in my opinion.

My friend Pär has several Pearl and Thuresson mics and uses them a lot. You should check out his Youtube channel with several examples and talks about the mics: https://www.youtube.com/user/parfridberg/videos

Par Fridberg's mic overviews are quite brief: https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=...k0AFhJ6ei7w6-5
...but as Mats says, his performance videos let you see them in use, for example:

Thanks a lot. I've seen her channel. Yes. I asked him in one of his videos about the microphones. The issue is that in the recordings examples, choirs and voices or piano with orchestra predominate. I have not found a close mic solo piano which is the example I am looking for.

Hi, I’ve used a pair of Pearl CC22 several times as a spot pair for pianos, I can share something with you is that is what you’re looking for.

As many may already know, Milab owns Pearl. I'm a huge fan of their microphone lines.

I love using VIP50, DC96B, and DC196 microphones on acoustic piano.

As a matter of fact, I used a pair of DC196s on acoustic piano for Jon Batiste's, 'Anatomy of Angels: Live at the Village Vanguard,' and 'Chronology of a Dream: Live at the Village Vanguard' records which came out in October and November of 2019.

The 'Chronology of a Dream' album was nominated for a 2021 Grammy in the category of 'Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.'

That piano sounded fabulous. I'm extremely pleased that I used my DC196s on that instrument.

Big fan of Pearl here. I have 5 CC22 cardioid mics.

Excellent on piano. Excellent on choirs. Excellent on strings and woodwinds. Outstanding as a vocal spot.

A universal studio / hall mic.

I have the Thuresson CM402 pair here and I did two piano recordings here with them recently; very modern repertoire.

My characteristic of them is that they are very clear microphones which have an enormous low end; I have not experimented enough to determine how much proximity effect is in play here and and what distance it eases off but when used in ORTF over orchestra, the low end representation was awesome

Thanks, Dave

It won't be enough to make an informed decision but here there's a little bit of piano sound through a pair of CC22's around the 2 minute mark.

Hopefully Greg Simmons (Simmosonic) will check in here and share his impressions, as a regular Pearl mic user. Here is one his reviews:

A bit of background info on 2 Ehrlund mics: http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Ehrlund

Ditto for the Thuressson CM 402: http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Thuresson/CM402

Double ditto for the PML range: http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Pearl

Sounds like it would work well on anything you want "Haunted" sounding, like a ghost. Now I need to try one.

Greetings Mats, thanks for the YT channel of your friend which I will check out. Out of curiosity,
I used a pair of Milab DC196 on a recording (raw file here: http://ficheiros.pedrocarneiro.com/[email protected]__1.wav) and was blown away with sound on marimba (my instrument). I see that your friend has a review on the Austrian Austrian Audio OC818. Have you tried these?

What about future support and service for microphones like Thuresson and Ehrlund? Thuresson is a one man operation, if something happens with the owner, no one can help you. The capsule is very special, and you are stuck with a unrepairable 1500 euro microphone. This may be even true for a brand like Ehrlund, this capsule is also a one of an unknown kind. I don't think Milab and Pearl have this problem, and since Milab has now taken over production and service of Pearl microphones, support is safe for the future.

Anytime! Yeah, those mics are quite awesome on acoustic instruments. Haven't tried it yet, but this week I did try two prototypes of M49 clones made by Jörgen Thuresson on voice and the Swedish nyckelharpa. Now I want a pair of those...

I'm not too concerned about the longevity of those mics. They will get used till they break. Some stuff like the electric components and mechanical parts can be swapped. If the capsule goes dud, it's perhaps too expensive to repair them. For instance it's cheaper for me to buy a used Sennheiser MKH40 than repair my one with a broken capsule. He probably does has a few spares lying around too.

Is the Thuresson 49 out now? How do you like it? How does it compare to something like the Flea 49?

I don't know, haven't used the original M49 or the Flea version. These two prototypes were borrowed via a friend of mine and Jörgen is notoriously slow on delivering. I ordered a pair of cardioid mics 8 months ago and don't expect them to materialize at all.

Here's that digital concert. Thuresson mics on flute, vocals, and nyckelharpa (key harp?):
