Talking OT: AGH! I'm gonna do it!

Some of you have met me in person and know what I look like. I've had long hair for about 12 or 13 years now. I decided a month or two ago that I was going to cut it as soon as I figured out what to do with it. Well, I'm finally doing it this week. Damn. I never thought this day would come. But, it's about time. I'm kind of sick of dealing with it so having short hair should be nice.

Jay,

are you sure? I am having long hair for 10+ years as well. I wanted to cut them numerous times, but everytime when I was sitting on the chair I told the guy to just cut a little bit away...I am not sure if I'll ever cut them - also my girlfriend would be little pissed if I do I think...

Best and think twice,

I think the chicks that dig mullets are also the same ones who like to go cow tipping. It's not really my thing. But yeah, I'm definatly going to do it. When I was moving back in July I was ready to shave my head because it was so damn hot out. I'm glad I didn't though, it wouldn't have been pretty.

When I was a kid my dad's barber used to cut my hair. He was permanently drunk, and of course he wound up taking a chunk out of one ear. Wasn't a lot, but it hurt like hell and bled all over the place. Consequentally I became barberophobic.

I then had long hair for 17 years, but cut it off 3 months before my daughter was born (about a year ago).

Baby + Long hair = Trouble.

Have to say I was dreading it, but once I had done it I've never looked back.

The weirdest thing is when you wash your hair. You keep sliding your hands down to wash the ends and you realise your grasping air.

yea, i cut mine off after having long hair for many many years. i actually enjoy it much more cut short though its weird at first.

while putting on a shirt, i'd reach back to pull my ponytail out of my collar..only to find nothing back there. did that for about the first 6 months.

...Make sure you do a before an after photo!!...

I had long hair for years and finally cut it about 4 years ago. It's a lot less hassle now... though it's not a "90 mph" buzz cut it's still a good 12" shorter than it was. Some times I miss it most of the time I don't...

I had hair down to my butt in college. I decided I wanted to actually have a job and make money one summer, so I did the obvious polar opposite, short of a full shave, and took my beard trimmer to my head. If my hair didn't start thinning, I think I'd still go buzz cut, actually, since it kind of worked for me.

The weirdest thing is the reaction of people you already knew vs. that of new people who will see old pictures with the hair. All the girls who knew me with long hair say I look better w/ short, all the ones who knew me post cut say I looked better with long except for my fiance. She doesn't like dirty hippies.

The beard thing I find more significant. Except for two clear cuts (one purely because of slip with a trimmer that I thought I had a guard on) that were over w/in a month, I've had coverage of at least mustache and chin for 10 years. I don't feel like myself without hair on my chin, and I'll be looking at a stranger in the mirror.

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a Bear.

Do it. I had some pretty seriously long hair for over 10 years. Cut it all off about 5 months ago. I'm SO happy I did. Not one day of regret.

The only annoying part is having to explain to about 900 people why you cut it off....but that passes.

Sharpen that hedge trimmer!

The '80's are so over, so is the "rock and roll" image.

I had hair down to my butt for 12 years, relieved myself of it a couple years ago and it was one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

I had my hair long from the time I was 13. I cut it off the first time when I was about 24. I now go in a cycle of growing it for a couple years and then cutting it, keeping it short for about six months to a year and then growing it again. I like the changes. I'm into the process, kind of like making a record.

Enjoy it my friend, it's fun.

P.S. I also feel the need for some kind of facial hair. Usually a soul patch.

Jay,

I understand where you're coming from;

From the time I was 16, I had hair to my butt. It was just part of who I perceived myself to be. As I got older and more into the business side of the profession, I started to think about cutting it off. One day while swimming, my hair had attempted to choke my yet again (both sides wrapping round and round my throat from both directions). My wife (a fabulous hairdresser) happened to have her shears with her, so I simply climbed out of the pool, pulled my hair back (like I was going to put it in a ponytail) and she cut it off at my shoulders! I dug that look and kept it there for a couple of months. Then I cut it higher. And higher. Eventually I got to the point of a buzzcut. Somewhat military in appearance. As I got older, I even allowed my hair to go gray (white, actually)... I felt like it made me look a little more 'seasoned' and professional. I kept it that way for years, but as before, grew bored. Much to my surprize, my hair ceased falling out while it was short and remained rather thick. I meanwhile had retired from the manufacturing/sales/rep side of the industry to open up a small studio and actual DO what I had been training others to do for years. SO, I grew my hair back out. It's not to my butt yet, (and I may not let it get there) but it's way past my shoulders. My wife loves it, the young chicks dig it, and I certainly look kind of 'rock and roll' in the studio pics with the rockers and rappers...

So in summary, go for it. Cut it off. But you're probably gonna grow it back in a few years, anyway!

BE careful Jay, 4 years ago I let a naked woman with clippers shear off my ponytail of 10 years and now I'm married to her and awaiting delivery of our 2nd son anyday now... Glad I managed to buy a Brauner VM-1 and another M-149 before I had to throw down for the minivan this fall! Never really pictured myself going down this path... rollz

That's a path I wouldn't mind going down though. I made the appointment today, I'm getting it done on Thursday night at 8:30. Unless my tech runs long and then I'll have to bump it to next week.

Well you saw my hair when I came to visit w/ Paul...

It's not long yet but I've stared growing it out for the first time ever. I've always had short, short hair but let it get long out of lack of time, feeling like I should do it once, and of course to piss off my wife

Anyway, I think it's a total pain in the ass to have long hair.

You'll probably save enough money in shampoo/conditioner to buy more gear...you'll have more time every morning so you can sleep an extra half hour or so.

let us know how it goes...I do know someone who started to hyper-ventilate when they got theirs done.

Jay,

May I suggest giving your sheared locks to an organization that will make it into a wig or two for children with cancer who get radiation treatments?

I didn't do it just to make myself feel good,
but it didn't hurt.

Like many others here, my hair was down to my butt after 8 years, until the boredom of escorting Cousin It took over. Plus I found that detaching from tired memories was part of the haircut. The memories dropped to the floor. Anybody else get that feeling when you got your haircut?

Wont it mess up chances of getting an extremely fat girlfriend and getting on the Jerry Springer show?

I dont know if I could take that sort of risk myself.

Of course. My parents borrowed the digital camera for their vacation so the before won't be the same day.

I'd get the fat girl friend and Springer show if I had a mullet. rollz

Unhappy DAMN!!!

I've been cropped!!! It's a bit shorter then I'd like. Actually, it's a lot shorter but at least it's not buzzed. I went to my best friends stylist (who's flaming BTW) and said I wanted to have an inch or maybe an inch and a half left. Well, it's more like 1/2 to 3/4" of an inch.

It was weird walking out and feeling the wind on the back of my neck. Overall it feels great though. I'll try to get before and afters up by Monday.

Hurry, before it grows back out. You'll be amazed at how fast that happens - if you keep it short, you've pretty much set up a regular apointment with the stylist.
