Mixing for shows

I got a rapper friend of mine that buys beats and records at my spot half the time and he's going on a mini "tour" in march something like 22 shows in 35 days and he wants me to do mixes for his shows.

From what ive heard, been reading, and what i took from the Mixed by Ali Pensado's place, the mix needs to have the drums BANGIN harder than usual, turn the adlibs up, and leave the vocals on the hook.

Am i missing anything?

Should a Squash the sh!t out of it with the L2007 to make sure its as loud or louder than the other acts?

you hook up the ipad and tweak it on the fly during the performance? thats crazy if you do, technology at its finest.

i used to do sound at a venue that had tons of rap/hip hop. what i can tell you is that squashing the hell out of it will NOT make it louder than everyone else. it will make it sound worse than everyone else, assuming they bring in tracks that still have microdynamics. not to mention it is incredibly hard to make a vocal sit well (properly) over a brick. so you will have this lifeless, uniform wall of noise and a vocal that makes no sense in context with it. hope this helps.

I usually give stems (drums/bass/synths/back vocals/Lead Vocals)

and they work it from there (off a laptop usually)

I agree dont limit it too much cause it will just suck the life out of the track

that will make any sound engineer's day! (stems that aren't uber-squashed, of course)
