Mixing in headphones

I mix thru an apogee duet 2 & I use ATH-M50s headphones. Should I turn the interface all the way up before I start mixing? Also, how much would getting a vrm box help?

Can't really see the drawback from turning the interface up a little bit but generally you want to make sure that you mix at relatively low levels to mid levels so that you are hearing an actual representation instead of all the sounds smashing your eardrum.

Mixing Low or high volume?

You can also cross reference your mixes at different levels to see if the mix is at least good balance wise. As to the vrm box, haven't used one before so I can't say.
