Preamp comparison!......wav clips

just did some comparing of my pre's. nothing real detailed just a "See what's what" type thing. Just wanted to share and to be fair I kept it simple by recording all audio using the 002r's A/D.

on the "Mic check 1,2,3" (not included) "I" thought the API had more kick punch and the GTQ2 had more detailed, the 737 with mullard tubes was nicer than the stock russian tubes, the 002r held its own. But shit, I only have headphones setup to listen to right now....MDR-7506 and HD-280 Pro.

Quote:
note:

mono audio was recorded into Protools via Digi-002r
All used the very same cables.
MPC-2500(TRS<>XLR)PreAMP(XLR<>TRS)DIGI-002R

except: recording the 002r wav went: MPC(TRS<>XLR)DIGI-002r.

Digi-002r, API 3124+, Avalon VT-737sp(with mullard NOS tubes, also tested with stock Russian tubes), Aurora Audio GTQ2mkIII, *MPC2500 Has all balanced outputs.

All gear ac power is connect to Furman PL-8 II power strips.

I'll do a more in depth test when i can with some vocals and stereo files throught the Rosetta 800. U99, U87ai, C414B-XLS, SM57

note: Files are 48k/24but so your media players may not play them. save to your computer and open with your DAW or editing/mastering programs like Protools or Sound Forge.
Post you $.02 cent.

they don't seem leve balance so i think that is effecting a the possiblity of a clear comparison. however, for this song i do like the api the best. the others come across alittle to smooth or flabby (inc the case of the stock avalon) in comparison.

imho.

I know, sorry. I had to adjust the output of the MPC a little for each track because the inputs of the Pre's where all different. So try inporting them into your DAW and adjust the levels to match.

i dont really see any opinions, so i thought i give the thread a bump.

i listened to the 002R, 737stock, API and the GTQ...

002: my least fav. not bad on its own, but the 'smallest' in comparison. something about the murkiness of the low mids on these things that pisses me off (considering i do alot of mixing where these are used for tracking)

737: had the 'biggest' low end out of them all.

API: similar to the avalon overall, but a bit tighter in the low mids

GTQ: my fav, especially for it's 'sizzle'.

i'm familiar with the 002, 737 and the API (not this model, but API's in general), but this is my first time hearing the GTQ. now i must get one.

the clips of the Vt-737 is one with the stock Russian tubes(MPC737stock) and the other is the clip with the Mullard tubes in it(737mullard)

I'll reload them when i get the Rosetta 800 in. se we can really hear what's what. I'll also do a single guitar or something.

word. i just checked out the 737 with the mullard tubes, and to be honest i prefered the stock 737. seemed a bit brighter/clearer to me.
