Putting the pitch/pod wheels where they are totally ruins the ability to drop something like a Blofeld or netbook on the top left. Why do that? So stupid.

I have one arriving next week. It seems that keybed feel is a very subjective thing. I've seen some positive and negative reviews. I don't play piano and am simply looking for something I can learn on AND has enough controllers for me to control ableton. This really seems ideal. My housemate used to have a Korg Triton so I'm not put off by the weight. I'll give a novice response next week

Still interested in more user reviews and details.
For instance: Are the pads as 'sensitive' as the ones on the MPD32 (which I didn't like).
Any trouble under Win7?

they look very good, and more importantly: useful.

but I've hear mixed reports on the controls, some work in certain software, some in others... guess i should get one and try for myself as well

Hi

I got mine several days ago. For electronic music is good for piano I dont like it. Key action is good but the problem are the velocity curves. PLEASE AKAI include more natural velocity curves in next Firmware upgrades!. PLEASE just copy velocity 4-8 on Korg keyboards and will be done!.
The velocity curves does not react like real instruments. I have the Korg Oasys and the velocity curves react like a real piano at velocity 4.
With the MPK88 the five velocity curves don't react as a real piano. They don't react as a real guitar either. I much prefer the velocity curves of the Oasys for real instruments.
However for drums I prefer those from the AKAI.

I tested the midi information sent through the USB port in comparison to the Oasys midi cable and the AKAI wins hands down. WIth the AKAI I was able to send midi data moving the knobs with steps from 1-2-3-4, whereas the Oasys was sending with steps from 1-4-7 aprox. So the AKAI brings a very smooth operation with software synth!.
The pads reaction are ok and the faders are ok as well and enough for me. I won't need longer faders. In general I will keep the keyboard and will use it for electronic music, I am still using the Oasys for piano and real sounds.

The editor plug-in is very good and helps programing. Although BEWARE I just put the foot in it and erased the firmware accidentally trying to upgrade the firmware, and it happens that AKAIPRO does not have the firmware on its website! so I need to wait for SUPPORT. UNBELIEVABLE!. PLEASE AKAI post the firmware on your website!!.

I had one but returned it, was not too happy with it, way overpriced for what it does, and yes the pads are lame.

I picked one up yesterday (akai mpk-88) and have been playing it all day today. It is by far the worst action I have ever experienced. Let me explain. I play piano, rhodes, organ, clav, and synth. I have played vintage instruments as well as most of the hardware synths out there (korg triton, yamaha motif, nords, rolands, etc...). The action on the mpk 88 is harder than a brand new steinway piano. It's harder to play than any real piano. It's harder than any keyboard I have ever played, and it's keys are deeper too. The keys can be pressed down way further than any real piano and this makes it impossible to play well. Unless you are a classically trained concert pianist I would stay far far away from this keyboard. I'm not a hater, just want to help my fellow keybaord players.

I do not want to pick a fight, but to all of those on here who posted that it had good action... you're obviously not keyboard players (maybe concert pianists), and have no idea what you're talking about. This keyboard has the worst action.

got one from thomann.
Had the same, by now famous, rattling noise coming from the inside middle part of the keyboard while playing the keys. I sent it back to thomann and they said al their batch had the same issue. Tested some more here in Romania and again, that rattling noise was there. Maybe there are some without this problem, but not on my side of planet.

I can't believe Akai let this fault pass by on such an amazing product. Really a shame.
I'm having the keyboard afterall, because it's cool, but the rattling noise is really annoying. I may try to dampen that sound as I heard it;s possible to do so if you take it appart and do some stuff on the inside

peace

guys, stay away from this unit. I sent the first one back due to the noisy keys and I got one back that was DRIPPING OIL OUT OF IT!!! It seems this is the damping oil from the keys.
I'm sending it back for a refund this time and Akai goes to my black list

I'm not about to make excuses foe Akai at all, if they were aware of a bad batch, they should have either recalled the units or outsourced a third-party unit to fix them locally...

That said... pull it apart and fix it yourself. These things are not rocket science nor are the issues. Easy to pull apart and reassemble.... not that you should have to, but imo it is so minor and such a quick fix that I would just get it sorted so you can get to work and enjoy this great controller.

The keys are fine too.... nothing you cant get used to and go back and forth from. The comment regarding the key was quite an overstatement.

Yeah, the keys are gorgeous, right about the pads though. I use my Maschine for any sampling situations.
