Digital Clipping craze(at 24bit)

Look I know tons of people say to record in between -10db to -6db coming in to your DAW. I used to always record in just before clipping at 16bit(before I understood 24vs16bit). And I have been recording in lower but it always sounds weak to me. No umph. I was in a major studio talking to the owner and he said to just record in my vocals as loud as I can before clipping like I used to because the signal gets thin when recording in so low @ 24 bit. So who has some insight on this? Cause why do so many people say to record low. I hate how it sounds then during play back I have to turn my monitors up louder and it just sounds thinner and more shrill to me then when I record it it with higher gain.

Maybe you're hearing the sound of your preamps being pushed or their trannies saturated?
