What are some of you guys skills on mixing the top end of the mix. How do u mix a keyboard clap or 808 hi hat? Where are u hi passing and low passing. my mixes always seem to be to bright on top and i never boost on anything but vocals. highs hats always seem to bright. claps and snares are always to bright, I need some pointers on gettting my high instrumnets right. I cant imagine boosting highs like people say for brightness. I guess they are talking about real drum recordings that sound kind of flat from the beginning.

For instance a shaker Ill cut below like 1k dip around 5 to 10 k to get rid of harshess and lowpass everything above maybe 12 to 13k
I do about the same for high hats.
snares i cut around 1 to 3 k to get rid of harshness and lowpass above 10 k
keyboard sounds like pianos or rhodes I cut everything off the top thats not heard.

kiks i cut above 5 to 6 k.............

this is kind of how IM working.

You are cutting your kicks off at 6k? Damn, I boost 7k a bit for attack.

try this I got this in a email:

The first and most important aspect of EQ & mixing is low shelving / hi
pass filter. Each instrument other than the bass & kick drum can be cut
starting at 100hz. This will remove bass frequencies that are not heard
but take up energy in the mix. This 'energy' takes away from your
overall headroom meaning it makes the overall track louder than it
really is. By removing these frequencies on each individual instrument
your overall mix becomes louder and punchier.

LESS IS MORE! When using EQ, boost frequencies sparingly! For example,
if a high hat doesn't have enough high end, choose another sample or you
can slightly increase the high end via EQ. If you have 2 instruments in
the same frequency, you may need to boost one and cut the other at the
frequency of interference.
Another great use for EQ is to find the 'sweet spot' of a sound. Boost
the EQ all the way up and sweep the entire frequency band until you find
the 'sweet spot'. This is a useful way of finding the frequency range
your instrument is in. From there you can choose how much to cut while
listening to the mix. For example, if you have a bassy string or synth
part that interferes with the bottom end, you may want to cut it at
300hz or more. Another rule of thumb is to cut the Bass & Kick at
30hz-40hz. The human ear cannot hear anything below this.
Cutting low frequencies off vocals is the biggest EQ tip of all. Try
cutting vocals at 300hz for a low voice or 500hz for a high female
voice. You'll be amazed at how they fit in the mix!

Cubase, Nuendo, Sonar all have eq on every channel. ProTools does not.
This can be a problem for ProTools users as EQ is used as a plugin which
takes up CPU usage. However, you can create buss or group channels to
lower the amount of CPU usage.
Overall, EQ is one of the most powerful tools when mixing. If you
haven't already, make sure to get familiar with your EQ

was just gonna say, sometimes to make certain freqs get more pressence up, eq down around it in the mix...

I agree. I rarely boost much highs. To me it seems like digital has plenty of highs as it is. If i ever boost vox at 2-5k with a high shelf, I will most likely use a low pass between 12-15k so I am not boosting too much highs. Again, i think digital recording producing enough highs for me. And I usually cut before I boost anyway. If you think things are too bright, use a high cut filter to soften up the high end or maybe it's just a volume issue....

thats how i feel 2
things are already a lil tinny and thin working with computer instruments

i listened to some of dave pensados mixes recently. it sounds like he cuts above 12 k on about everything that would normally be considered highs
