The Guru

Hi Gordon,
Just curious what the role of "The Guru" was exactly when recording with The Strokes? He was kind of producing? Giving input in songwriting? Giving input on overall sound? Did you enjoy having a "guru" around?

Thanks

I believe he was originally a very gifted and trusted guitar teacher to several of The Strokes guys. They brought him in on the very first day as a security measure in case I tried to pull any ego trip, "not listening" or other such behavior to these young musicians. He had a lot to say about guitar tone, pickup selection, modes for solos and often suggestions for EQ during the recording process. At first I was confused having another voice in the studio, especially on top of how vocal each band member really was during the process, about EVERYTHING! ---I certainly learned to love JP the Guru.
