Lightbulb Michael Beinhorn bio/discography

Michael Beinhorn started his career as a co-founder of the New York musical collective Material which he formed in 1979 with bassist Bill Laswell and drummer Fred Maher. In 1980, Beinhorn and Laswell were approached to record with Brian Eno and the result of that collaboration was the track "Lizard Point" on Eno's record "Ambient Four; On Land".

In 1983, Beinhorn co-wrote and co-produced Herbie Hancock's seminal album "Future Shock", which contained the hit single "Rockit", one of the best known and influential tracks in hip hop. "Rockit" went on to win a Grammy in 1984 for "Best R&B Composition".

Beinhorn has since produced records for such diverse artists as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soul Asylum, Raging Slab, Hole, Soundgarden, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, Social Distortion, Korn and Mew. In 1993, searching for greater sonic options for his projects, he devised the Ultra-Analog recording format which incorporates an analog tape recorder with a two inch eight track headblock.

Beinhorn has received numerous Grammy nominations including a 1998 nomination for "Producer Of The Year" for his work on Celebrity Skin by Hole and Mechanical Animals by Marilyn Manson.

Over the past ten years, Beinhorn has become aware of the concerns facing creative individuals trying to maintain their creative vision while working in an industry that is collapsing. To this end, he has been increasingly active in mentoring fellow artists and aspiring record producers. He has a blog called "How to Save Popular Music" and is writing a book which addresses creative ethics and the creative process in recording. He continues to pursue his love for sonic exploration and inspiring the people he works with to excel.
